OLVIANOS *) Note, that the main nameday for Olvianos is May 29 (feastday of Hieromartyr Olvianos), but many websites mention September 17 as another possible nameday. Some time ago we found information on the internet that one of the 50 Martyrs of Palestine, commemorated September 17, was named Olvianos. However, this information is not available on internet anymore and the source cannot be verified. | 17 September / 17 Σεπτεμβρίου (nameday) | OLIVIANOS (2) (Olivianos, Olvianos, Olivia) / ΟΛΙΒΙΑΝΟΣ (2) (Ολιβιανός, Ολβιανός, Ολιβία, Ολίβια) *) Note, that the name Olivia, here used as a feminim form of Olivianos, is not the same name as Olivia, the feminim form of Olivier. There were many Greek Olbias over the ancient world: in Ukraine, in Libya, in Sardinia, in Anatolia. The word 'olbios' exists in Ancient Greek as 'happy', 'blissful'. But it has no deeper etymology. Meanwhile the word 'Olbia' may be interpreted as Ol(y)bia, which is Olubia, which is 'land of lubi', whom we have all the reasons to consider a happy and blissful nation. So, 'olbios' may be a borrowing of nation's name in this meaning. A Greek professor of history commented such an etymology as a possibility. |
